De La Salle Appoints New Head Coach of Girls Basketball

CHICAGO—May 21, 2021—De La Salle Institute (De La Salle) is pleased to announce Coach Matthew Stevenson as the new Head Coach of the Girls Basketball program. Stevenson brings over a decade of high school coaching experience, including responsibilities as the lower-level head coach in both boys and girls basketball. Stevenson also teaches History at De La Salle. He replaces John Smith, who retired after 23 seasons.

“Coach Stevenson will continue to build on the success of the girls basketball program and brings tremendous enthusiasm and experience to De La Salle,” said De La Salle Athletic Director Tom White. “Not only does Stevenson bring a defensive intensity to the game, he will lead with a wealth of knowledge after being an assistant varsity coach under Coach Smith. We are grateful to Coach Smith for all he has done for our girls basketball program.”

“I am excited to have this opportunity to coach a great group of young women here at De La Salle,” Stevenson said. “I look forward to competing for a championship in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference. We will work hard on and off the courts as we develop a caliber of student-athletes worthy of our Lasallian legacy.”

Stevenson played Division I basketball at Drexel University.
