De La Salle Girls Soccer made history last night when they defeated Fenwick 2-0 to advance to the State Championship! They will face the Glenwood Titans on Friday, June 2nd at 11:00am at North Central College in Naperville.
The Meteors were led last night by Junior, Mia Ortega who tallied both goals. Her first goal came at a much-needed time in the first half. With time winding down, Mia was awarded a Penalty Kick in the 37th minute and she successfully converted it into a 1-0 lead. The Meteors struck quickly in the second half as Mia scored her second goal in the 46th minute and giving the team a two-goal lead.
From that point on, the Meteors relied on their defense and Senior Goalkeeper, Emily Samuels. Samuels was stunning in goal, saving all four shots on goal that she faced. Every time the Friars pushed, the Meteors responded in-kind, not allowing high danger chances, and moving the ball with precision passing.
This is trademark Meteors soccer at its best. The Meteors have outscored their opponents 34-1 during their run to State. “This win really hasn’t sunk in with me just yet,” said Head Coach Carlos Nunez. “You hear all the words of encouragement and the accolades that we have accomplished, and I can’t translate it into words. Maybe this summer, I will finally be able to sit back and think about what we have accomplished with this group.”
Nunez expressed his excitement about this weekend’s State championship “We can’t wait to see what these girls have in store for us this coming weekend. If one thing’s for sure, it’s going to be multiple hard-nosed games, and this group is ready for it.”
