Lasallian Tradition

Lasallian Tradition “St. John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us.” “Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.” “Live Jesus in Our Hearts, forever!” There’s nothing quite like hearing an auditorium of 700+ students and 60+ faculty and staff pray these words together, but even more so at the start of every class period, every school day. Whether it’s your first day at De, or at graduation, these words become part of your De La Salle Experience, grounding you in the Lasallian tradition that connects us to the world. To the world? Yes. When Meteors become members of the De La Salle community, they’re also welcomed into an expansive world-wide network and community of faith that extends much farther than our campus on 35th and Michigan. Since 1680, the Christian Brothers have been carrying the torch of de La Salle’s mission, resulting in thousands of Lasallian schools in over 80 countries. De La Salle Institute in Chicago is one of them. We teach based on the vision and spirituality of St. John Baptist de La Salle. A Lasallian education goes beyond academic excellence. Our teachers, led by the values that De La Salle taught his own teachers, strive to touch…

About Us

History

A (Brief) History of De La Salle Institute De La Salle’s initial champion was Brother Adjutor of Mary who foresaw a school for poor and working class boys: "I made up my mind to leave nothing undone in the direction of fitting the boys of the masses for the battle of life, morally as well as educationally." De La Salle Institute has long been committed to the education of an integrated student population, a reflection of the composition of the Chicago community. The classes in 1892 were inclusive before their time: they did not discriminate on religious grounds - two of the first nine students were Jewish. This philosophy of nondiscrimination has guided De La Salle throughout the 20th Century. Now, students from throughout Chicago and approximately 20 surrounding suburbs attend De La Salle. They come from all ethnic, racial, economic and religious groups: 1/3 Caucasian, 1/3 African-American, 1/3 Hispanic-American.In 2001, De La Salle became the first school in Chicago to introduce 1-to-1 tablet computers with a technology-infused curriculum. In the fall of 2002, De La Salle opened a campus for young women in collaboration with the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis at 1040…

Mission

Mission Adopted by the Board of DirectorsThrough the curriculum and outside resources, the faculty creates an atmosphere that encourages the capacity for right judgment, provides an introduction into the cultural heritage of American society, promotes a sense of Christian values, develops an appreciation of the aesthetic, and strives to prepare the students for professional and non-professional work in the world. The Christian Brothers, who own, administer and help staff De La Salle Institute, have worked with students of varying racial and ethnic backgrounds in order to develop the same skills and attitudes originally fostered by St. John Baptist de La Salle. The Brothers can point to the first director, Brother Adjutor, who professed that the Brothers were to provide the environment to foster the development of professional and academic skills which assist the students in becoming successful young men and women who would in turn contribute their talents to the community.Accordingly, the programs at De La Salle Institute are shaped by a dedication to the Christian life and values. In cooperation with the students and their families, the faculty strives to achieve the development of Christian, educated and cultured men and women.
