Our September 2022 Meteor of the Month is Mia Nuñez.

She earned this recognition for being an exemplary student who embraces and embodies what it means to be a Lasallian, committed to faith, service, community, social justice, and academic excellence.

  • Mia a peer minister, member of NHS, Spanish NHS, Ambassador Club, Journalism Club, and since moving from college prep to honor’s level courses in her sophomore year, she has maintained a 4.5 GPA.
  • Outside of De La Salle, she is a section leader for violins in an all-student mariachi band, a Chicago Freedom School Fellow who works to create social change, and during the summer volunteers to help coach an aged 5 to 9 baseball team.
  • Mia is an athlete who played basketball her freshman and sophomore year. She is a four-year softball player.

Nominated by Mr. Dowling, he wrote “She is a four-year ACTIVE, City of D leader. She is organized, empathetic, and highly intelligent; she is the epitome of faith/service/community/and social justice. Currently in her role as Mayor she has been the driving force behind most of this week’s spirit activities, this pep rally, and the homecoming dance.”

Mr. Dufficy noted that, “during Covid online learning, she was a true leader in our zoom classes. Her presence made a significant difference in the atmosphere and positive learning environment.”

Carlene Klaas, Dean of Enrollment Management added, “Mia has shown her dedication to our community through her continued work with prospective families. She has volunteered her time to work admission events and give tours to families considering our fine school. Most recently, she took time out of her Saturday to train 40 student ambassadors on how to give a campus tour. We have had families explicitly say that their tour and conversation with Mia is what solidified their decision to attend De La Salle. She is truly an asset to our community!”

Finally, Ms. Monaco states, “Mia is a very hardworking, responsible and diligent student. Mia is always eager to take on new tasks and be a helping hand when and where needed. Someone who is not afraid to show initiative – she is someone I can always count on. She is a great role model as she displays leadership in and outside of the classroom. Go twinny!”
