Meteor Football Looks Ahead to 2025

Chicago – October 4, 2024

The decision to suspend the 2024-2025 Varsity season was a difficult but necessary step to ensure the long-term success of the program. At De La Salle Institute, our administration, faculty and staff are 100% committed to rebuilding our football program under Coach Harold Blackmon’s leadership.

The safety of our players was the primary factor that led to the decision to suspend the Varsity season. This year’s Varsity team began the season with a roster of 21 players, with five of them having no prior football experience. Despite the low numbers, our players gave a valiant effort through the first four games of the season. With a combination of season-ending injuries and the lack of experience of our remaining players, it became clear that the entire team’s safety was at risk. While disappointed, the players understood and agreed with the decision to end this year’s campaign.

Looking to the future, we were able to field our largest Freshman football team since 2016. Despite not moving forward with the Varsity schedule, the Freshman team is playing all nine games this season, while gaining vital experience as they head into their Sophomore year. Another positive sign for Meteor Football is our returning Varsity players have already started their offseason of strength and conditioning with 100% participation thus far. The returning players are committed to De La Salle Institute and the 2025-2026 Meteor season. With the support of our administration, our current freshman numbers, combined with the anticipation of a large incoming Freshman class, we are optimistic about the future of Meteor Football. We look forward to coming back stronger and better in 2025!

GO METEORS!
