Alumni Association Meeting Minutes
Thursday, February 22, 2007
Minutes Taken by Mike Boehm ’92 & Steve Burrows ’91
- Steve Burrows:
- Bill Fuhry agreed to run the Members Relations Committee
I agreed to run the D-Final committee. There was a discussion about getting
the D-Final back under the umbrella of the Association. Tom Palmisano
thought the Association should certainly be involved in an oversight role,
as opposed to having to run the event the night of. Mike Chmiel would like
to see the event run by the Association in years past so that we have some
input into what the money earned is used for. This year I will act as a
liason of sorts between the Association and the D-Final Committee, and we
will discuss at the next meeting how the committee and the Association will
handle the event in '08.
- Question was posed about reviving the Brothers for the Brothers
event/committee. Prentiss let it be known that problems arose when the
event changed from a yearly event to an every-other-year event. Also, he
pointed out it was not meant to be an exclusive event for African-American
alums. Prentiss was nominated by me to chair the committee and everyone
agreed to the nomination. He agreed to step in and look into reviving the
event.
- Mike Hughes was "nominated" to continue in his role running the Sports Hall
of Fame.
- Joe Hughes clarified that alumni association meetings will be the 2nd
Thursday of every even numbered month (Feb, April, June, August, Oct, and
Dec), not the 2nd Tuesday as listed in the notes/email for the December 7th,
2006 meeting.
- Executive Committee agreed to meet monthly. Prentiss recommended doing so
via conference call, which worked out well in the past.
- Per Mike Chmiel, Tom Lyons agreed to serve as a website monitor, and will
make sure the site is up-to-date with regard to alumni issues.
- Mike Chmiel asked that if anyone know someone who could work a few hours per week or month to man an "alumni table" in the development office, helping
out the association with projects, to report back at the next meeting.
- Bob talked about the 5th projector screen that will be utilized at the
D-Final event to advertise. He agreed that we could put alumni information on the board, like when our next meeting is.
- There was a general discussion about notifying members of the association
when a fellow graduate dies. Bob mentioned the capability of emailing
everyone on the general alumni email list when he learns of this
information.
- There was a request of everyone at the meeting to bring some ideas to the
next meeting about our goals as an association and our objectives.
- Mike and I will be working on our mission statement for next meeting.
- I requested that everyone take a look at the by-laws and email Mike Chmiel
or myself with thoughts, changes, etc.
- Mike Chmiel volunteered to look into the possibility of holding a retreat
for alums.
- As 1st VP, Greg will develop an events calendar for the next two years.
- A lengthy discussion was had regarding the 2007 Alumni banquet. It is
currently scheduled for Friday, September 14, 2007 at Beverly Country Club.
The Monday before the banquet (9/10), we'll be having the White Sox outing
once again. Sports Hall of Fame is scheduled for the Friday night home
football game on 9/7.
- Then there was a discussion about moving the event from September to
November, specifically the Friday after Thanksgiving. Several expressed
what a wonderful event the banquet used to be when it was held in November
at the Hilton. Bob was questioned about if we're locked in at Beverly or
whether we could change. Bob agreed to check into that issue. Mike Chmiel
and Ed Bodinet agreed to call some downtown locations about availability in
November. Tony Khazen will talk to John Aranza about how the 50th
Anniversary class would feel about a date change at this point. The banquet
committee agreed to meet on March 12th about the possible date and location
change.
